पुरुषोत्तम श्री राम का जन्म अयोध्या के राजा दशरथ के यहाँ हुआ। दशरथ की तीन रानियों में सबसे बड़ी रानी कौशल्या के गर्व से चैत्र नवमी के दिन राम का जन्म हुआ था। बाकी की दो रानियों कैकई को दो पुत्र और सुमित्रा के एक पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई।

     माना जाता है की भगवान विष्णु के दसवें अवतार में से 7वां अवतार राम का है। त्रेतायुग में राक्षसों के अत्याचार से परेशान ऋषि मुनियों ने भगवान् विष्णु की आराधना की । और विष्णु ने 7वें अवतार में राम का जन्म हुआ । राम ने अपने जीवन में बहुत सारे त्याग किये । अपने पिता द्वारा अपनी सोतेली माँ को दिए गए वचन के लिए घर त्यागकर 13 वर्ष तक वन में रहे अपने त्याग और प्रश्नस्वाभाविक के कारण की उन्हें मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम कहा गया। राम नवमी के दिन अखण्ड पाठ कर प्रसाद का वितरण किया जाता है। वास्तव में राम का जन्म एक मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम के रूप में हुआ उनके नेक त्याग और करुणामई भावना का अत्यंत दुर्लभ थी। इसे महान पुरुष को कोटि कोटि नमन।
